Hygiene Station

Process

I was doing research about turtle to understand about them better. Then I stumbled upon Turtle Spa BBC video mentioned in my Turtle Shower article. The little fishes attract my attention to do research on them. The more I do research on them, I have a better understanding of them. Imagining them cleaning the turtle’s shell, I feel so inspired about them. Since the relationship between turtle and surgeonfish are based on convenience, it will be interesting and much fun to portray surgeonfish are in the hygiene department. Initially, I want to name their kiosk name with “cleaning station”. However, I feel that cleaning is too general. I consider surgeon fish traits again to clean the stuck algae at turtle’s shell and flippers. Turtles go to them for hygiene purpose. I relate the turtle in the human context. We will wash hands before eating to wash away all the bacteria. Therefore, “Hygiene Station” is the best shop name to distinguish surgeonfish lifestyle, diets and their contribution towards the ocean life. Hence, I design the ‘Hygiene Station’. Yellow against dark gray signboard will give a great contrast in the deep blue sea.

Story Concept

The curiosity about surgeonfish leads me to do research for its real photos. It adds fuel into my inspiration. Bluish and black are surgeonfish’s main colour. Its fins and tail are yellowish and greenish. Its distinctive colour contrast helps me to find the correct colour. The drawing process helps me to be solely focus on the fish. Next, I begin to think on the story composition of the whole illustration.

The father surgeonfish is listening to the turtle’s needs whereas the mother surgeonfish listens to the mother turtle. Next, I feel inspired to add the little fishes to swim melodiously around the signboard. They give great support to shine around the signboard. Parents seek to understand their client’s needs to clean and gorge algae stuck at their shells and fins. Cooperative loving family.

      Carl,
Which section of the video do you find it fascinating? About turtle or about the surgeonfish or about my illustration process? 🙂
