Colour or Not to Colour

The theme of the Hope Animation story is kids-friendly. It speaks to every child about their arrival into this world regardless of nationality and ethnicity. To colour or not to colour – that is the biggest consideration. If I colour the character, the skin colour is fixed and race becomes part of the picture. The aim is to educate children in an entertaining way about their origin, and not to alienate them.

In the beginning of the visual concept, I apply light green to the human skin colour. The purpose is to prevent any indication of race. However, it does not turn out well. So a different colour would be better. But every realistic skin colour denotes a specific ethnicity, alienating all other ethnicities.

Finally, gray is decided on as the skin colour, for gray represents the vagueness of colour, neither black nor white, but somewhere in the middle.
